Our beautiful mother, Betty Louise Edens of Charleston, born September 3, 1950, the second child of twelve to Everett Ralph and Lillian Mae McLane Edens, departed our world for a better one on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Hubbard Hospice House, in Charleston, WV.
Mother was a joyous soul, so full of love for her family and friends. Her laugh was infectious and could be heard far away, she had a wonderful sarcastic sense of humor which has spilled down onto her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, antiquing, going to gospel sings, listening to old country music, collecting Coca-Cola and Betty Boop items, and dining with her son, Thomas and daughter-in-law, Kelly at Los Agaves, her favorite restaurant. She loved her many cats and her little guy, “Lil Bit”, who is sorely missing her.
Mom was a 1968 graduate of Sissonville High School and worked her first job after school with her adoring grandmother, Odessa Marie Holmes McLane, at the McLane Restaurant
She worked many different jobs thoughout her life, K-Mart, Fas-Chek, Colonade, Carbide, delivered newspapers for years with her three boys for the Charleston Newspapers, and eventually ended up in the pharmacy for Rite-Aid in Sissonville. She was also a court reporter, typist for over 35 years, and had attended WV State University at Institute, WV.
Mom was a twenty year breast cancer survivor and a real fighter to the end, she taught the five of us about love, survival, and the need for family, as she basically raised us on her own. She was our greatest teacher and we will dearly miss the wonderful mother that she was.
Betty is survived by her loving family, daughters, Carolyn Pennington (Greg) of Sissonville, Valerie Minger (Jim Rezabek) of Columbus, OH, sons; Dwayne Smith (Liana) of Charleston, Thomas Smith (Kelly) of Clendenin, George Smith (Amanda) of Kinston, NC, sisters; Melody Williams of St. Albans, Nancy Whittington of Cross Lanes, Pamela Burdette (Keith) of Matthews, NC, Linda Jones (Jerry) of Loganville, GA, Becky Deal (Randy)of Comfort, Angela Edens of Charleston, brothers; Raymond Edens of South Charleston and Richard Edens of Charleston, two great aunts, Vivian McLane of Charleston, and Pam Edens of Marmet. 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, one unborn grandchild, and one unborn great grandchild, 21 nieces and nephews, 20 great nieces and nephews, and 1 great great-nephew, and 1 great- great- niece.
